This May has been an incredible Sturgeon fishing month!
Once again our clients land another massive White Sturgeon from the Fraser river between Mission and Chilliwack, British Columbia. They had booked a Guided Sturgeon Fishing trip with us in hopes of seeing something bigger than themselves. And so we headed upstream from Mission in search of a true River Monster.
Baits are sitting deep and we wait
This fish hammered down the bait and took off like lightning! Withing 30 seconds she had left no more than 5 meters of line on the reel before we were able to pull anchor and power reverse down river rapidly and precisely to prevent a catastrophy. And so we prevailed, and only by about 1 or 2 seconds. Kevin from Washington D.C. was into the fish of his life. It breached in the first 2 minutes and revealed itself while the usual hollers of “holy shit” and other things best left untyped here!
Chase your Sturgeon!
We drifted down river with the current as Kevin tried to subdue the fish. This takes time on big powerful Sturgeon. Each time the fish peels line from the Shimano Talica 16 reel it spends energy, so it will tire out eventually. The angler is also running out of energy. It’s a battle of willpower. We eventually landed it on a small sand bar in the middle of the river about 3 km from where it was hooked. 45 minutes had passed.
At the end of the day 4 White Sturgeon were landed. The other fish were small but what made 2 of the little guys interesting was they were hooked on light spinning rods while we were fishing for some fresh bait. 3 foot Sturgeon fight awesome on light tackle.
Til next time – Brian Mack
